Today, the concept of concrete is much broader and has undergone many modifications over time. Nowadays, concrete is obtained not only from rock crumbs (natural and broken aggregates) but also from artificial aggregates and fillers, while instead of cement, other binders are used and its properties are enriched with admixtures and additives.
Generally speaking, concrete can be defined as a building material obtained by combining fine-grained fillers with binders. The material obtained in this way is called a composite in which the cement slurry acts as a matrix and the aggregate as an inclusion.
Concrete and steel are currently the two most commonly used materials in building structures. Sometimes they complement each other (creating reinforced concrete) and sometimes compete with each other in the sense that structures of a similar type and function can be built from one of these materials. And yet, engineers usually know less about the concrete of which the structure is made than about steel.
